Seasonings Simplified - 25 Spices & How You Can Actually Use Them

Jul 13, 2017

How many spices, seasonings, and dried herbs do you have sitting in your cupboard right now that you haven't used in 6 months?

400?!

What??!!! Ok, ok... I was imagining an over-exaggeration, but 400 is probably pretty accurate, right?!

You know, those spices you collect and never throw away, or pack with you when you move and keep rotating to new living spaces (still never throwing them away).

Or that spice you got for ONE recipe and pushed to the back of your cupboard.

Basically, by "400," I mean A LOT.

I know that I personally have sooo many seasonings that beg to be used.

I picture them like the toys in Toy Story where you grab their neighbor and they all start worrying or feel left out because you didn't pick them. Ahhh "PICK ME! PICK ME!"

Ok, I digress...

Back to your pantry. All in all, I'm guessing you have a plethora of spices in your cupboard that you just aren't using.

If you use ALL of them, then either you only have salt and pepper or your spice cupboard must be out of a magazine!

I'm here to help you put those lonely spices in the back of the cupboard to USE!

Spices and seasonings can be EXPENSIVE! I have a reallyyyy hard time throwing away a spice that I haven't used in forever, because I may just need it "that one more time!"

What I've created is a simple little guide for you to experiment with new flavors and add some variety into your cooking.

In fact... I've put together a list of 25 spices and how you can use them in different flavor combinations.

Really... IT'S SIMPLE!

The guide is all flavors and spice combinations we've heard of, so my challenge to you is switch it up!

You can have the same base recipe (grilled chicken, for example) and make it so many different ways, simply by using what you already have on hand!

Now again... these seasoning ideas are only one millionth of the combinations you could create.

Use this guide as a go-to to switch up your routine, fix some cravings, and/or utilize your lonely spices.

I'll also add, if you ever have FRESH herbs on hand, use those in addition to the dried herbs!

Nothing beats fresh herbs. Really, not even cake. .....WHO SAID THAT?!??!

The suggestions below are not ALL inclusive by any means... simply some common spices I use from my cupboard.

If you have a combination you love under a different flavor profile, please share it! These are solely to give you some ideas. I'd love to learn of some other popular flavors (Spanish, Egyptian, Brazilian... let's hear 'em!)

Also, the fun thing about the list below, is you can simply pick & choose spices from each category. Even if you only use two per flavor profile, you'll end up with some tasty food!

Alright already, time for...
